We are not having a party because we had a huge 70th birthday party for both of them last year. We are renting condos in southern Indiana and the whole family will be together and I am looking for ideas of what we could do that would be special. I would really appreciate any help you could offer. My parents were very poor and never went anywhere because they didn’t have the money or the clothes to wear.

Their 6 children respected their wishes not to have a “big party”. So we came up with the idea to send post cards to everyone that my parents knew over the years as well as the president who will respond and governor, senators, and congressmen. The post card informed the receiver of their 50th wedding anniversary and gave the date and their address, with a request that they “send a card” of congratulations. My parents were “elated” when they would go to the mailbox each day for nearly a month and find the cards.

For many, including people who don’t consider themselves collectors, a traditional ornament from Yuletides past is just the gift that would return a simpler spirit of Christmas. Having an old fashioned Christmas tree is one way families celebrate warm comforting memories of their earlier years. Although what one thinks of as an old fashioned Christmas tree may vary to each person, to me it comes from early childhood and from watching old Christmas specials on TV. Do you remember seeing the wide tree with its outstretched arms, the screw in lights, and all the tinsel?

My Christmas tree consists of the old screw in Christmas lights, and tinsel. Old fashioned Christmas decorations are mostly large tarnished glass ornaments. There are not any newer ornaments or decorations to disrupt the harmony. The original cardboard boxes are so fragile as are the ornaments. Bubbler lights were manufactured to replace real wax candles on the tree.

The tree must be an old fashioned Christmas tree style. During the period, the Balsam Christmas trees were most popular.

Delicate, fragile and uniquely inventive, they remain the visual focus of a traditional holiday celebration. Sermon texts dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries referred to this use of the tree as a pagan rite. A prominent feature on early Christmas trees was the apple, which was used to symbolize paradise, health, beauty, strength and vitality. Documentation from the early 19th century indicates that in Polish villages blossoming twigs of apple, cherry or hazel trees also functioned as early Christmas trees.

In southern Poland these were referred to as either podlazniczka podlaznik is a term for a young man who wishes people good luck at Christmas and New Year , sad orchard or wiecha wisp. In central Poland the term gaj grove was used.

There were hundreds of different items ranging from large quantities of inexpensive pieces to one of a kind store displays costing thousands of dollars. Many of the items were stored in vintage boxes but were sold individually. I have included some pictures of some of the pieces as photographed in Germany. Painted by Oluf Olufsen Bagge. The relevance of ancient pre-Christian customs to the 16th-century German initiation of the Christmas tree custom is disputed. Resistance to the custom was often because of its supposed Lutheran origins. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmas time.

A later folk version of the story adds the detail that an evergreen tree grew in place of the felled oak, telling them about how its triangular shape reminds humanity of the Trinity and how it points to heaven. In such plays, a tree decorated with apples to represent the forbidden fruit and wafers to represent the Eucharist and redemption was used as a setting for the play.

Like the Christmas crib , the Paradise tree was later placed in homes. The apples were replaced by round objects such as shiny red balls. The Regiment of the local high-Sacristans of the Cistercian Order refers to what may be considered one of the oldest references to the Christmas tree: On the Christmas eve, you will look for a large Branch of green laurel, and you shall reap many red oranges, and place them on the branches that come of the laurel, specifically as you have seen, and in every orange you shall put a candle, and hang the Branch by a rope in the pole, which shall be by the candle of the altar-mor.

Its 16th-century origins are sometimes associated with Protestant Christian reformer Martin Luther , who is said to have first added lighted candles to an evergreen tree. Chichilakis are most common in the Guria and Samegrelo regions of Georgia near the Black Sea , but they can also be found in some stores around the capital of Tbilisi.
